The laughter of children playing in the San Diego surf is recreated in a sculptural and colorful environment at The Shoppes at Carlsbad where tidal waves beckon sliding, whales and sea grass become playful companions and golden sea stars join arms to form a symmetrical climb-through dome. 

This children’s play environment was one of the many enhancements included in the shopping center’s major makeover and transformation.

About The Location

The Shoppes at Carlsbad is a major retail shopping center in coastal North County San Diego, California, positioned directly off Route 78 and minutes from Carlsbad’s beach corridor. Originally opened in 1969 as Plaza Camino Real, it was the region’s first enclosed, regional-class shopping mall. Today, the center anchors a dense commercial corridor that serves Carlsbad, Oceanside, and Vista, drawing both local residents and steady highway traffic. With national retailers, restaurants, and entertainment options, the property markets itself as an “ultimate California shopping experience,” blending indoor retail with a relaxed coastal lifestyle.

About The Project

Center Stage Productions transformed a high-visibility atrium at The Shoppes at Carlsbad into a destination for families using custom indoor soft play equipment. The entire space is designed around a coastal theme that fits the mall’s location. Young children can climb soft wave structures, crawl through the play tunnel, slide down a small step-and-slide feature, or balance on sculpted whales and oversized beach balls. A geometric star and beach-ball hybrid dome adds height and visual interest. Built-in seating wraps around the installation, giving parents a comfortable place to supervise while kids explore. The result is a branded soft play park that increases dwell time, drives repeat visits, and gives nearby retailers a steady flow of foot traffic.
